Carbide Embedding
Mig Tungsten Carbide is a welding process that deposits extremely hard tungsten carbide particles (70 Rc) in the weld puddle of a hardfacing wire as it is applied.

Mig Carbide is unsurpassed is abrasion and impact resistance when applied with POSTALLOY PS-98. This is because softer wires wear away allowing the tungsten carbide to literally fall off the wear surface. POSTALLOY PS-98, with a hardness of up to 60 Rc, prevents this from happening.

POSTALLOY® PS-98 s a metal cored triple deoxidized Iron based wire, alloyed with Chromium and Tungsten. This primarily used as a matrix alloy product is for the Tungsten Carbide embedding process. Unlike soft mild steel welding wires, which are commonly used in the embedding process, the microstructure of PS-98 is designed to encapsulate and protect the Tungsten Carbide particles from premature erosion. Many of the common embedding wires are solid which require high voltage and amperage setting to achieve a fluid puddle. POSTALLOY® PS-98 is metal cored and develops a spray transfer at very low current levels. This combined with it’s unique alloy content forms a very fluid weld puddle. This promotes an even dispersion of Tungsten Carbide particles within the weld puddle. These unique properties make it an ideal choice when used with the Tungsten Carbide embedding process. POSTALLOY® 299-SPL is an open-arc hardfacing overlay that utilizes a specially formulated tungsten carbide to produce a "highly feathered" microstructure that is unusually hard and more abrasion resistant than standard tungsten carbide hardfacing wires. Operates at lower than normal currents to minimize dilution and help develop its high hardness and unique microstructure in the first layer. For extreme earth abrasion resistance with little or no impact. Hardness (1 Layer): 55 to 60Rc

POSTALLOY® PS-9 & PS-10 are tungsten carbide, nickel base hardfacing wires designed to resist severe abrasion but unlike traditional tungsten carbide wires, they absorb more impact without fracturing. These alloys can be applied crack-free with the proper welding procedures. These alloys are great for parts that are repeatedly hardfaced and are prone to spalling. Because of the unique chemistry, Tungsten-Carbide-Nickel-Chromium-Silicon-Boron, they also have excellent resistance to erosive wear, frictional wear, corrosive wear, and maintain their hardness, even at temperatures of 1100°F (565°C). Weld deposits contain up to 50% fully fused, pre-alloyed carbides. The alloying elements in these wires produce a high hardness alloy that encapsulates and protects the carbide particles, reducing premature wear caused by erosion next to the carbide particles. POSTALLOY® PS-9 & PS-10 have very good weldability and a very soft arc, this, in combination with the nickel matrix, reduces weld dilution and carbide dilution to produce truly outstanding multi-wear wires. POSTALLOY® PS-9 is softer, 40-45 Rc, with a tougher matrix than PS-10 for applications that require more toughness. It has the same carbide hardness and concentration. Hardness (1 Layer): 55 to 60Rc

POSTALLOY 220HD is a proprietary blend of Tungsten Carbide with a small addition of Chromium Carbide. It produces a very smooth weld deposit with improved impact resistance over pure Tungsten Carbide. The unique blend of Tungsten Carbide in a Chromium rich matrix also provides some corrosion protection but primarily helps to provide a high polish in service to reduce the coeffcient of friction. When protection against severe abrasion, with limited impact, is needed, POSTALLOY 220HD is an ideal choice.
   • Easy out-of-position weldability with the 1/4" diameter. Fast deposition with 3/8”.
   • Excellent AC or DC operation, even on a "buzz box"
   • High metal recovery - no slag to chip. POSTALLOY 220HD is over 90% efficient.
   • Low amperage
   • High deposition rates - up to 3 times faster than ordinary electrodes

Typical Applications
Postalloy CP63070 is a nickel base self fluxing alloy combined with a high percentage of high carbon, cobalt free cast and crushed tungsten carbide particles. The low fusing temperature of this alloy combined with cobalt free carbides help to reduce solution alloying and melting of the carbides and matrix. This produces the highest amount of abrasion resistance possible. The tungsten carbide used is this product goes through an oxidation reduction process that reduces the oxidation potential of this alloy. This helps to reduce unwanted overspray and gives the operator more control of the puddle.
The characteristics of this coating make it an ideal choice for many applications:

   • Thickness of up to .075” may be applied without special techniques
   • Wide plastic range, easy to fuse
